okay, I hink, this can be solved quite straight forward. Just have a look at your directory tree structure within wp-content/plugins. The structure should be as follows:

wp-content
    + plugins
         + backupwordpress
         | + backupwordpress.php
         + another_plugin.php
         |
         + another_plug_containted_within_subdir
                  + another_plug_containted_within_subdir.php

also, check out the WordPress Codex on plugins: http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins

This is the case with several plug ins, and I just hope I am installing them correctly in the directory. I am unzipping, then by ftp loading the FOLDER containing the documents into the content/plug-ins directory. Hardly any plug in show up in the Adm Plug In panel.

I am using WP 2.3.1 and a non-default but WP approved template. I am also not educated in any programming, save minor HTML. Thank you.
